PEACEFUL AGGRESSION: BLACK FRIDAY PROTEST ON MICHIGAN AVE

At 11AM on the morning of Black Friday 2015, Chicago community leaders, activists, and supporters of multiple ethnicities gathered to protest the “out-of-control” cycle of police brutality, and judicial negligence.

Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of protesters gathered at the 400 North Block of Michigan Avenue in Chicago, not only in grief of the apparent assassination of teenager, Laquan McDonald, but also in an attempt to raise awareness that “While You Shop, People Get Shot.” Protesters chanted this and other phrases in unity at high volumes.

Protesters, led by Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., U.S Rep. Bobby Rush, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, and other community leaders, poured into the “Magnificent Mile’s” Luxurious, Gold Coast Corridor and stretched south to lock arms outside of major retail stores such as Nike, Saks Fifth Avenue, Burberry, and Express- ultimately prohibiting entry to shoppers.

As protesters stood grounded and rooted in their purpose, some consumers attempted aggressive entry by force, occasionally. Protesters eventually calmed unhappy shoppers who couldn’t enter and continued to lock arms and complete their mission while chanting “Sixteen Shots, No One Shops!”

Officers were present, on site in promotion of crowd control and safety, however officers kept a very good distance away from protesters as not to interfere, at all, with the natural flow of the protest. Another goal of this organized gathering was to declare and demand that Mayor Rahm Emanuel, CPD Superintendent Garry McCarthy, and Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez “step down.” Protester’s told MBN, “It’s time to step down!”

To some, the protest may have seemed scattered or unorganized at times, however we assure you that this was a very effective peaceful-protest. In footage, we can witness native consumers being educated about current, local, political corruptions and affairs taking place in their own city. You can also witness, easily, the power of fed-up peaceful protesters. The disruption of Black Friday shopping on Michigan Ave. in Chicago was very successful. It was a bold move and quick response to the release of young McDonald’s execution video.

It was also a clever approach on behalf of scattered groups of protesters to peacefully, but aggressively engage shoppers and re-route them with new knowledge. So many faces of different families changed to shock when protesters educated them on the 13-month “cover-up” of Laquan McDonald’s execution. Most shoppers walked away in surprise and empathy after hearing the news. While few shoppers thought they could force their entry past protesters, most simply internalized the scenario they were witnessing and left.
